Baby Naming—No Game This Time
Winston Jack Jewkes
We really were unsure what to name our little guy. See this post for other options we considered.
We knew we wanted some sort of special connection with part of the name—all the middle names we had picked out are family names in one way or another.
Winston is a name I came across when Sam and I worked at Scout Camp in 2005. There was a scout one week named Winston. I immediately thought of Winston Churchill and liked it. I didn’t think of this again, however, until I saw it listed in a baby-name list in one of our pregnancy books just a few months ago. I realize not everyone likes it, but we do, and it fits him very well.
Jack is my grandpa’s name. Not John who goes by Jack—he’s always been Jack. Jack Blackham. He and my grandma just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He served in Normady during WWII. He’s a big tease, and I’ve always enjoyed being teased by him, as well as watching him tease others. He’s a great grandpa. We were close to naming him Jack as a first name, but it was a little too popular and a little too short for a first name for my liking. Winston is their 16th great-grandchild on my dad’s family branch, incidentally born on the 16th of May (they pointed that out to me).

Grandma and Grandpa came to visit us in the hospital (thanks for bringing them Jane!). Grandma said he cried when he heard we named the baby after him. And he did again as he held the baby in his arms—bashfully unwilling to let any body else take him. It was tender to see.
