Happy Pi[e] Day to You!

Today is Pi Day. You know, the math symbol pi = 3.14. Today is March 14. You get it, right? Thanks to my 9th grade math teacher for pointing that out and celebrating math with pie. Totally awesome.

We celebrated yesterday, and had a bunch of new pies our family has never tried before. Like shoofly pie, caramel apple, Japanese fruit pie, pecan cheesecake pie, brownie walnut pie, and chess pie.  Some of which we probably won't try again. We also had a razzleberry pie, strawberry pie, banana cream and this berry-topped pudding pie that has an AWESOMELY YUMMY meringue crust (I made with almonds instead of pecans or walnuts) that I want to figure out how to use in a better and different way.

I also took this fun s'more cup recipe and made it into a pie with a layer of peanut butter at the bottom. It was the kids' favorite. Our neighbor happened to stop by so she and her boys came in for pie. Unbeknowst to us, her oldest is allergic to peanuts and he happily took and ate some s'more pie innocently thinking s'mores are peanut-free. Ooops. Good thing he isn't more allergic than he is. I got some benadryl out for him and they left quickly because he started to feel sick. Poor kid.

My mom told a lady she works with about pi day, and was asked what we did. My mom said we all bring a pie or two. Then the lady asked what else we did. She said she wasn't a math person and couldn't figure out how a family would sit around talking about math. Ummm....yeah, we definitely don't do that. My mom said that math was just the excuse to have pie day, and all we do is simply sit and eat piece of pie after piece of pie.

Every pie we ate was homemade. That's the only way to go, baby. Well, 97% of the time. Marie Calendars is good, too, every now and then.

What a fun idea; i've never heard of celebrating pi day. An excuse to eat pie is always good!
